How Far Can Pragmatic Mechanisms Take Us? *

This is a bold statement. The field is only just now beginning to understand what general pragmatic mechanisms are like once we dig deeper than intuitive statements. One wonders: to what extent could a precise set of pragmatic mechanisms (maxims), interacting with semantic denotations, produce the “narrow restrictions” that Truckenbrodt carefully documents? The present commentary explores this ...

Learning Phonemes: How Far Can the Input Take Us?

Many studies on developmental speech perception (e.g. Werker & Tees 1984, Kuhl et al. 1992) have documented changes in speech perception that occur during an infant’s first year of life. These changes are generally understood to reflect the phonemic structure of the native language (Best et al. 1988, Liberman et al. 1957). There is little research, however, on the phonological abstractness of t...

Expectations for state leadership in health reform have never been higher. States are thought to function as "laboratories of democracy," but they do not fulfill this role effectively because insufficient attention is paid to experimentation and knowledge translation. Congressional proposals to encourage state action cover too narrow a span of state health policy, do not provide states with suf...

Neural representation of action sequences: how far can a simple snippet-matching model take us?

The macaque Superior Temporal Sulcus (STS) is a brain area that receives and integrates inputs from both the ventral and dorsal visual processing streams (thought to specialize in form and motion processing respectively). For the processing of articulated actions, prior work has shown that even a small population of STS neurons contains sufficient information for the decoding of actor invariant...
